In this week’s story class, we explored the Chinese folktale, Little Mouse Will Marry, a story about recognizing true strength, respect and worth within oneself. Here are three simple follow-up activities to reinforce the story’s message with your children or students:
- Discuss the Story’s Message
Talk with children about how Little Mouse’s family searched for the most powerful match and what they discovered. Ask questions like, “Why did the Sun suggest the Cloud?” and “What did Father Mouse learn by the end?” This will help them reflect on the idea that strength can be found in unexpected places. - Art Project: Create Character Headbands
Let children create character headbands of Father Mouse, Sun, Cloud, Wind, Great Wall, Little Mouse and Young Mouse, using paper cutouts of characters, paper headbands and crayons. As they decorate their character headbands, discuss each character’s role in the story and how they contributed to the lesson. These character headbands can be used to act out the story later. - Act Out the Story
Invite children to use their character headbands to act out Little Mouse Will Marry. This helps children engage with the story’s message in a hands-on way while building their confidence in storytelling and creativity.
These activities will enhance children’s understanding of the folktale’s themes while promoting imaginative play and self-expression.
