School Assemblies and Programs
For over 20 years, I’ve been bringing the magic of interactive storytelling and drama assemblies to JK to Grade 8 schools across southern Ontario. These engaging programs not only entertain and inspire children, but also incorporate many Ontario learning expectations.
Each of my presentations is designed to captivate and educate students while aligning with relevant educational topics and the Ontario curriculum. Students are invited to help dramatize the stories by using simple props and costume pieces brought out of the ‘magic story bag’. This interactive approach encourages students to develop their personal creativity, self-expression, and social and emotional well-being, making learning a safe, fun and immersive experience.

Frequently Asked Questions about Cheryl Thornton’s Interactive Storytelling Assemblies
Our assemblies are designed for JK to Grade 6 students. Each assembly is tailored to be age-appropriate and engaging, ensuring that students of all ages can participate and benefit from the storytelling experience.
Each interactive storytelling and drama assembly is 60 minutes long. This duration includes interactive storytelling, student participation through drama, and the opportunity for students to ask questions and express their thoughts and feelings.
The Arts — Drama: Students engage in oral storytelling, role play, and interactive dramatic forms — directly addressing expectations in Creating and Presenting, and Reflecting, Responding, and Analysing.
Language — Oral Communication: Listening and speaking expectations are built into every program. The Reader’s Theatre scripts (included with every booking) extend this into the Reading strand, giving classroom teachers a ready-made follow-up activity.
Health & Physical Education — Social-Emotional Learning: The programs naturally support SEL expectations woven throughout the HPE curriculum: communication, empathy, and cooperation.
Kindergarten — The programs also connect to the Ontario Kindergarten program (2016) through the four frames — particularly Demonstrating Literacy and Mathematics Behaviours (oral storytelling and listening to narrative) and Belonging and Contributing (participating in shared experiences and engaging with others).
The assemblies feature a wide range of universal tales chosen to teach important character values, life lessons, and to foster empathy and understanding.
