Rooster goes to the fiesta: follow-up activities for March 6, 17 and 18, 2025 story classes

The Rooster Collage

Here is a fun art project for children to creatively interact with the story, Rooster Goes to the Fiesta. Children will create a colorful rooster collage using a variety of materials, helping them develop fine motor skills while engaging with the story’s themes of friendship, kindness, and celebration.

Materials Needed:

  • Construction paper (various colors)
  • Scissors (child-safe)
  • Glue sticks
  • Feathers (or tissue paper cut into feather shapes)
  • Googly eyes or stickers for eyes
  • Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
  • Stickers, sequins, or glitter (optional for extra fiesta flair)

Instructions:

  1. Rooster’s Body – Give each child a pre-cut rooster outline.
  2. Add Feathers – Provide feathers, tissue paper, or colored paper strips for children to glue onto the rooster’s tail and wings. Encourage them to mix and match colors to make their rooster festive.
  3. Decorate the Face – Have children glue on googly eyes or draw their own, then add a beak and a wattle with markers or cut-out paper pieces.
  4. Create a Fiesta Scene – Give children a piece of blue or yellow construction paper as a background. Let them draw a sun (Rooster’s helpful friend) and decorate with stickers, sequins, or colorful scribbles to represent a lively fiesta.
  5. Story Connection – As they work, ask questions like:
    • “How do you think Rooster felt when no one helped him?”
    • “Why was the Sun a good friend?”
    • “What do you do when a friend needs help?”

Extension Ideas:

  • Dramatic Play – After finishing their art, children can hold up their roosters and retell the story in their own words.
  • Music & Movement – Play Mexican folk music and have a mini-fiesta where the children can “fly” their roosters around the room.
  • Group Mural – Instead of individual roosters, create a giant poster with all the characters from the story.

This activity helps children express creativity, practice storytelling, and reinforce social-emotional learning in a fun and engaging way. 🌞🎉🐓
